Kumite 組手

There are 8 different kumite drills practiced in the SSKA syllabus relevant for gradings.  This system allows the student to take part in appropriate and safe sparring exercises according to their ability.  Proficiency in performing these exercises is tested at gradings with the most advanced students taking part in jiyu kumite (free sparring / freestyle).

Gohon kumite (5 Step sparring)
五本組手

Learned at white and orange belt level (10th & 9th Kyu).

This exercise practices blocking 3 types of attack whilst stepping 5 times in zenkutsu dachi (front stance),

followed by a gyaku zuki chudan (reverse punch to the body) counter after the 5th block.

The attacks practiced are oi-zuki jodan, oi-zuki chudan and mae-geri chudan.  These will be blocked in turn with age-uke, soto-uke and gedan-barai.
